Art for Today - more Shanghai!

Shanghai - this one is all me. A book I wrote, drew, inked, colored and lettered, as well as self-published back in 1997. I really wanted to do more in the field of comics other than just ink, and I couldn't find anyone who would give me a chance, so I just did it myself. Still one of the projects I'm most personally proud of.

Art for Today - Inking John Royal

Here's a piece I did for the comic I self-published back in 1999 called Shanghai. John Royal penciled her, and I inked it. John and I worked together on Prime and Ultraforce back in the Malibu Comics days. I always enjoyed working with him, and felt our styles went together really well.

Art for Today - Shanghai vs Spawn

This one is an oldie, but completely hand drawn by me. Crow quill and rapidograph on bristol board. This is my character Shanghai fighting Spawn above the city. When I see some of my older work, I wonder how good I could have become if I had continued to draw for all these years.

Getting to work on the Website

I've been trying to pull together a cohesive theme for my new website - www.skulfrak.com - and it just wasn't getting there, so I decided to just work on the framework and get some material plugged in for now.  It's nothing fancy so far, with just a few thumbnails, but there will be a lot more soon.  I've told myself this is a project I'm not going to stress over, so I work on it for now when the mood strikes me.  I've also been focusing more on the comics I'm going to be publishing there, so the site has been a secondary concern for the past month.

I have six pages done of the new Shanghai comic so far, and I'm very happy with it.  I'm not ready to show it yet, but I'm excited to see where I can take it.

A few Shanghai shots

I've put these up elsewhere, but I guess I should post them here too, for those who haven't seen them.  These are the character study concepts for the new Shanghai series I'm working on.

Old Art - Shanghai by Royal

Here's another piece of my Shanghai character, penciled by John Royal and inked by me. This was a cover on the original issue #1 I self published more than a decade ago. Digging out all of this old art has gotten me wanting to do some more with this character and finish telling her story.

Old Art - Shanghai by Perez

This is a piece that I commissioned for the comic I self-published back in the 90s. Penciled by one of my all-time favorites, George Pérez, I inked it and colored it myself (my Photoshop skills are a little better after a decade. This was going to be the cover for the second issue of Shanghai: Big Machine, which sadly hasn't seen publication - yet. I still have some ideas for this character, and a pile of art for her, so she may be back in the new decade.
